Borne out of the need to increase my own vocabulary and because word of the day email selections seem to be taking an increasingly prosaic turn, this is an adventure in small writing that begins with the dictionary. Stay tuned for more nerdy hijincks.
And so we begin with jocose, an adjective meaning playful in style or fond of joking. As in, your mom’s terrifically jocose; she had me laughing all night long.
Or to avoid going too low-brow, too quickly: check out Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, a wonderfully jocose theatrical experience at the Kraine Theater on E. 4th Street in the East Village. The New York Neo-Futurists serve up a hearty menu of 30 plays in 60 minutes. Of course, not all their plays are lighthearted and silly, but they are constantly writing new material and the order of the plays is determined by each audience, so you’ll never see the same play twice. If this sounds vaguely familiar – Ira Glass recently borrowed the format for an episode of This American Life. And, ticket price varies depending on the roll of a dice, so go on a Friday or Saturday night when you’re feeling particularly lucky.
